I have never heard of Brightlingsea being pronounced in any other way, but I may not have met real locals.

There is a village callewd Mealsgate in north Cumberland which used to have a station - the junction fot Aspatria - with a class conscious porter. When the train arrived he would call outside the First Class Compartments:

"Meals Gate, change hyeah for Aspaytriar"

Ouside the Second Class:

"Melsyat for Spattry"

Outside the Third Class:

"Melsyat - Git oot"
