In SA Chaper XVII, John is going to the farm to get more supplies of eggs & butter; also perishable items though not needing a daily supply like milk!

I can recall too that before someone invented sliced bread (and before loaves were supplied wrapped) some loaves were in two parts and could be broken in two for a half loaf.

And glass milk bottles; mainly pint though perhaps some quart bottles, plus smaller ones for cream. They originally had a recess for a cardboard disk top, but the later style had a narrower neck and an aluminium foil top which covered the whole of the top without leaving a recess. Sometimes the tops were washed and saved for a charity, though being thin foil it took too many tops to make even a cent or two!

And in New Zealand school milk for morning break; generally warm from standing in the sun. Once a friend and I got through six each for a dare one morning.

Here in Wellington NZ (Churton Park) there is still a milk delivery service every two days, though we buy from the supermarket as he did not always deliver the right type (what with full cream, trim and calcium enriched trim etc). Is “trim” a new name for skim milk?
