As a child on camping holidays in the East coast of the North Island and up north of Whangarei, I used to be sent to the local farm for a billy of milk early each morning, but other holidays in the far north where there were no dairy herds meant we relied on tinned milk. To this day I loathe any milk other than fresh - a problem travelling around the UK a few years ago as all the B&B's relied on UHF milk (ugh).
As John Wilson has said, milk deliveries still exist in NZ although most are down to three days a week with the rise in supermarket suppliers. I got it delivered in Christchurch while my children were young but now, having moved to Paekakariki just north of Wellington, and although I notice milk deliveries are still here, I tend to pick up milk with the rest of the groceries at the local supermarket for convenience sake.
Re the keeping of milk, meat etc, a screened safe with lattice sides to encourage windflow was often on on the south side of many farmhouses up until a few years ago and you can still see them on some of the older houses.
