Before this thread gets out of hand - spell checkers actually check for typing errors, and if your typing error produces a correctly spelt word then it will not pick it up as an spelling error.
And to be even more tedious - depsite complaints in the UK, spell checkers do not use American English; they use many languages and you have to tell it which one you want. As most software originates in the USA they tend to be set to American English, trouble is most English English users don't know how to change it (or can't be bothered to find out!)
