Thanks Ed for your comments, but I'm afraid I must continue the discussion. Assuming that the viewer is facing north, the sun at midday would be behind the viewer and the stick's shaddow would fall away from the viewer on the north side of the stick. The Dinner sign is on the south side of the stick and would not be touched by any passing shaddow! It would make sense in Australia, but I cannot see it working in the northern hemisphere.
