This question of the meal dial has been known about since the first edition of SW, and in last year's Amazon Publication, The Best of Childhood, both versions of the picture are reproduced, together with the comment:
"In his haste, Ransome drew the meal dial as if the sun rose in the north and it had to be redrawn for later editions."
At first, all three meal markers are in front of the tall pole. This is still the case in my own copy, 6th impression 1942. Later editions - probably post-war, when blockmaking became easier again - show dinner behind the long pole.
You don't tell us, PeterW, which country you are speaking from. Clearly you and Ed have different editions.
