I recall taking "Guinevere", my very scruffy narrowboat, from Reading to Brentford along the Thames. As is the custom in those parts we exchanged a cheerful wave with every skipper we passed including those of some "triple deckers" which no doubt cost several hundred times more than our modest vessel.

About half way down the river we passed another narrowboat, all polished brass, gold plating and geraniums. The crew of that vessel resolutely ignored our existence. I know exactly what Laurence means... .
