Whilst the petrol/oil mixture - as used by many two stroke engines - (was the Trojan engine two stroke?) is a clincher as far as text accuracy goes.
Many engines of the time, although they had an electric starter, did need hand cranking if the battery was weak or had not been used recently. My 1930's cars - because I could not afford new batteries when I owned them - always needed to be hand started though you might be able to use the electric starter if the engine was warm.
Cars of the period often did not have syncromesh between 1st and 2nd gears and thus were easy to crash and one only has to listen to a learner today to find out that it is still easy to crash syncromesh gears.
