LM I agree with the implication that Swallow 1 was probably not of Morecambe Bay type, whereas Swallow 2 certainly was.

Laurence. Thank you for spelling this out (see "LM" quote below) I think that this discussion sits better on this branch of the "Swallow anew" thread.

J a) 1 think the key difference was that the Morecambe Bay boats were working boats. They were owned by fishermen and cheaper to build and easier to keep watertight than boats with a centreboard case

b) The Coniston and Windmere boats were the playthings of relatively rich people. The additional building and maintenance costs of a centreboard case would have been unimportant.

LM I had understood this to imply that Swallow 2, which we know was bought at Morecambe Bay and had no centreboard, fell into category a), and Swallow 1, which belonged to the Collingwoods who were well off, probably was in category b)

The Collingwoods were not well off. Robin was a philosopher and his father worked as Ruskin's secretary. Hardly the occupations of the idle rich, but neither profession offered opportunities to make huge amounts of money. Lanehead was loaned to the Collingwoods, but I forget by whom. [Pause and wait for deus ex machina post providing missing information.]

So it's not illogical that Robin[?] bought a retired working boat, rather than a flash recreational dinghy. The similarity noticed by LM between S1 in Christina's book and the boat linked to in message 18489 would seem support this hypothesis.
