From the "better drowned than duffers" files: NEVER accept on trust that a watch is waterproof. I capsized (with a new stopwatch/watch) in tidal sea water at Rock, Cornwall on day #1 of a holiday many years ago, and after seeing the LCD display go blank, thought "oh dear". A few days later, having guessed times and tides in the meantime, the digits slowly returned, and the clock counted 1 minute for about three minutes of real time... :-|
