Since the Blacketts, Walkers, and Callums all went to boarding schools, pets would be difficult to keep. Clearly, no parent would be able to say 'you can only have it if you take care of it.'
I remember that in one of Wodehouse's school stories,a student had 'Aberdeen' terriers, which he had to board at the local pub. Trouble ensued, naturally.
