That is a very good point - a reference that I had certainly missed.

I think I am right in saying that wristwatches "came in" with the 1914-18 War, and that in the early stages some pocket watches were "converted". I suspect that children were more likely to be given cheap pocket watches, these being commonplace, and probably cheaper than wristwatches, at that date, and the specific reference in SW to Nancy's "wrist watch" marks it out as unusual.
