Even modest English houses had a front room which was used only for very important occasions, such as tea with the vicar or laying out the dead. Kitchens could be to the back or side to the house. The long distance between kitchen and dining room seems to be an basic design fault endemic in the English country house. Billiards I'm not sure about. When did people start playing billiards? Surely billiard rooms started appearing in the inter war period if not before.
