Nancy was beginning to take on more adult ideas in the later books, such as seeing that bravery isn't always measured by how much bluster a person makes, and during the war she would possibly have worked in an organisational capability rather than 'leading the troops'. Given that she would have been in her early twenties in 1939, its likely she would have been married(to Timothy, I feel)and possibly with a young family. If she was still living in the lake district, or had evacuated to Beckfoot, I can imagine her as very efficiently(and forcefully) finding suitable placements for the thousands of children and young families. I pity the farmer's wives such as Mrs Tyson. They would have no chance!
