I'd agree with Bob about the order of reading - I read the Broads books first and they've always been high on my list.
Other reasons I particularly like them are:
* the geography is true - except I was disappointed to find most of the railway bridges have now gone (with the railways).
* there is a lot of local interest - eel babbing, sailing barges, etc. - a bit like S&A for that.
But the Lakes books have the magic of camping and independence - no adults, not even an Admiral.
