I'm sure the order in which each of us read the series has something
to do with our preferences. Coot Club was the first for me, and it has
always remained high on my list, although not at the very top. I believe
the Broads books do not share the popularity of the others because none of
the original characters have a part in them. Dick and Dorothea came on the
scene only in the fourth book, and immediately become the leading
characters in the next one, with a cast of unknowns. It's interesting
to note that once they become a part of the S&A's, Dick's character begins
to take on a strength rivaled only by Nancy's. By the time Great Northern
was written, Dick, though not the planner or leader, was the one whose
ideas and ideals directed the action of the group. If for no other reason,
this steady growth of Dick's character convinces me that Great Northern
is a "real" book, and not Peter Duck.
