I was wondering if John went to a naval academy like Dartmouth...
The better public schools, like Sherborne, had sailing clubs and John could have learned to be quite skilled.
A good grasp of Bradshaw's Railway guide could have assembled the Walkers at Crewe from anywhere in the U.K. and had them travel North to the Lake together.
Would a Captain in the RN be able to afford to send his children to public school without being independently wealthy?
