Not all steam launches.

Those on Windermere puff - but gently, elegantly and silently. John would never have heard the Blackett's launch coming (SD) if Captain Flint (or the Blacketts) had had the sense to stick to steam.

Condensing is even more silent and elegant. Numerous fishermen have never heard me coming in time to get their beastly lines out of the way.

By contrast steam locomotives - and traction engines - are crude and noisy.
