At my extant Grammar School, which seems to live very close to the head of the league tables for "top State school" these days, the Remove was in existence when I joined, in 1964, but petered out soon after, along with Masters wearing gowns. It was, as I recall, a fifth form for dimwits, who had to resit "O" levels before going on to the Sixth.
