The Public School I attended in the 1950's/early 60's, started pupils at the age of 11 in the first form.
One worked ones way up and the brighter pupils took their O levels (now GCSE's) in the forth form, slower pupils spent another year in the fifth form before taking O levels.
When you had passed your O Levels (minimum 6) you went into the Removes for the 1st year of A levels. If you did not get the minimum number of O levels you were asked to leave.
A Levels were taken in the 6th form, but you could stay on to do further work in the Upper 6th, if you could not get into your required university that year.
