We arrived in the UK on the 6th and were happily floating around the Broads by the 11th. We didn't even find out about it until 36 hours after it happened. By the time we flew home six weeks later, things had calmed down a bit. In fact, things worked in our favour as the lack of tourists meant we never encountered crowds or queues - not even in the Lakes or London. So I saw the Lakes as close to as empty as Ransome must have often seen them.

Incidently Prue, we live in Wellington and have a bach at Waikawa Beach which is still called Kapiti Coast but is actually just over the boundary in Horowhenua.
