Hi Deb, welcome! Yes that was about the year we arrived also - September 11th in fact, about four hours after the US bombings. Result was more than the usual shambles at Heathrow due to mid Atlantic flights being returned and the next day police walking around with machine guns at the ready (very eye opening to us kiwis used to no armed police except the Armed Offenders Squad).
We used the underground a great deal in our three months in the UK plus trains to and from Birmingham and Oxford. Highly impressed and has been a prime motivator in our recent move to the Kapiti Coast as there is a real train service to Wellington.
