I would have to agree about NZ trains (yes, I am a fellow Kiwi and yes, I am new to this board). But I also have to say that I was impressed with the British train system last time I was over there - early September 2001.

We caught a train from London to Norwich which was fast, comfortable and ran to time. Consequently, we can confirm that the station at Norwich is indeed a terminus and that trains do indeed run out by the same way they ran in. However, instead of waiting in the train for 10 minutes, we had only 10 minutes for one of us to get all our luggage (rather more than 2 small suitcases) from the platform the intercity train arrived at to the platform the local Wroxham train left from - while the other found a pay phone and ordered a taxi to meet us at Wroxham and take us to Southgate's Yacht Station in Horning. No lunch in Wroxham followed by a launch down the river for us.

To pick up on another thread I remember reading before I decided to join this group, the Lakes books were always my favourites until I spent that wonderful week sailing a (sort of) Teasel look-a-like around the Northern Broads! We did also visit the Lakes and Pin Mill on that trip but it is the Broads that stole my heart.
