More particularly, the thought of what a Reader's Digest Condensed Swallows and Amazons would be like . . .

By a smoking mound they saw a wigwam mae of larch poles. Out of the wigwam came a small old man. "Hullo," he said, "would you like to look inside, people like to."

They went in and sat down on the bed in the dark hut. "Do you always live here?" asked Susan. "While we are burning", answered the charcoal burner. "Would you like to see our adder? you are sitting on him!".

They all jumped up and he got a cigar box out from under the bed and his son showed them the adder.
"Tell Mr Turner to look out for burglars", said the younger man.
Then the Swallows left the charcoal burners.
