This is the way I was taught - by my father who also taught me to sail and introduced me to the Ransome books - but I have never come across anyone else who ties them this way before. It really is faster and easier and I frequently do it without looking.

I teach the knot this way because it solves the problem of the 'rabbit' going through the hole and around the tree the wrong way.

It always amuses me in first chapter of We Didn't Mean ... that John very clearly uses the 'other' method of tying a bowline.
