I've seen bowlines tied that way by climbers but have never learnt how to do it. Doesn't the loop fall around your wrist? Most climbers nowadays use a double figure of eight as it as about foolproof as foolish humans can make it. But not as good as a bowline for getting a snug fit when tying on directly to your waist. In SD, however, I think John tied a series of loops and the others wriggled into them. Not best practice in my view; AR is a good guide to most activites but please don't follow his instructions on rope work in mountaineering!
