From my copy of Partridge's Etymological Dictionary:

1) The effective origin of this group is afforded by the L adj < niger > , black, stem and root nig-: of obscure origin: perh cf the Gr < anigros > (a-, merely prothetic)< impure, unclean, akin to Gr , darkness, and < knephaios >, dark, sombre: Indo-European root, *neigh-, filthily - hence, very - black.
