Can't find out why the "n" word means black in Latin.
Maybe someone else can provide the clue of where it came from.
DID find however the following snippet:
In 1939 Agatha Christie published a novel called "Ten Little
N******". Later editions sometimes changed the title to "Ten
Little Indians" or "And Then There were None". But as late as
1978 copies of the book with the original title were being produced.

So AR was in good company, albeit he did not use the word in the
title of his book!!
