In Ransome's description of "the lake" he included a reference to another lake that they could see only a glimpse of it during their trek across the high country on their way from Swallowdale to the River Amazon as Roger and Titty left a trail of pine cones (SD, CH 23). They had seen a flight of swans, and John stated that maybe it was that other lake that was the destination of those swans. They did say that with that tiny glimpse, they did not see any sign of boats.

From that description, I think that other lake was somewhere to the west of their location. If that is the case, then the point of view was as if "the lake" was Windemere, and that "other lake" only glimpsed was Coniston, since in the real world, Coniston is to the west of Windemere.

But as to the location of "the lake" perhaps we can conclude that it truly existed - in the mind of the author.

I am glad he invited us all to come along and enjoy it also.
