Did anybody finally decided where it was, or if it actually existed? In 1996 (the date of my edition of 'In Search of Swallows and Amazons') Roger Wardale seemed to have found both a suitable building in not quite the right place, and a location without a building; although he says Jim Andrews found it by dowsing, apparently locals couldn't remember any building being there, even in the past.
Of course like any good author AR wouldn't have been restricted in any way to what was actually there. And his illustration of the D's struggling up the snow slope to the misty shape of the North Pole (WH p.323 Cape 1948) is pure magic; it's nearly 60 years since I first saw it, and it's remained vividly in my mind for all that time.
