Seed cake is made with carraway seeds, embedded throughout the mixture.
They give a strong flavour to the whole cake. They aren't scattered on
top, as I believe is usually done with poppyseed cake.
Ginger Beer is quite different from Ginger Ale, but since I don't like
either of them, I can't speak with authority. In my experience, G Beer
is usually a cloudy grey, while G Ale is clear and orange/brown. I think
that when AR was writing, G Beer would often be home-made, while G Ale
was always commercial. There was much less variety of bottled drinks on
sale in those days.
