Not just 'evidence' - most British houses have a water storage tank - I've spent enough time during my life fiddling with ballcocks, breaking ice etc. I am not a plumber, but I imagine the reason for the tanks is that water is supplied from the main at pressure. If a hot water system or radiator circuit was supplied direct from the main, it would be subject to that pressure and would be prone to leak. Instead they are fed from the tank, by gravity. There need only be one ballcock valve, in the supply-pipe to the tank. It also prevents siphoning back. OTOH, instant hot water heaters, like wot I have got, require supply at pressure.

Don't know if there are any water rams left in the Lakes. It is an old way of lifting water, and rams are now regarded as antique. I think there's one in Northumberland somewhere.

For Jock 1: 'I say, Dot,when you've plunked the roses in her room . . . Some on the dressing table . . . Some on the mantelpiece and some with the biscuit tin by her bed . . . just make sure Dick's got all his things . . . Coming .. . COMING! Jibbooms and bobstays! We've only got four hours left . . .' She was gone and back again in a moment with three glass vases for the flowers. 'Water in the bathroom,' she said. 'I've got to keep an eye on Cook and the stores.'

For Ed K: what do you make of 'plunked'?

For Jock 2: Re 'grading'- too late - the genie is out of the bottle. I commend you to read the story of the Sorcerer's Apprentice, or if you prefer, {}{}{}FRANKENSTEIN{}{}{}
