Some points which have arisen today:

1) Ed has raised the 'telegram' queries before - some years ago. I should have known. Apologies, Ed.

2) The possibility that the Beckfoot 'waste products' went straight into the lake might explain why the children took a dip in the river, rather than the lake.

3) I ask this as respectfully and politely as I can:

the study of the old starts after those that know the simple answers from experience are dead

John - unlike 'Water in the bathroom', the above statement has resisted all attempts by me to get to grips with it. Maybe it hasn't survived the Atlantic crossing. Could you 'unravel' it a bit? 'Old starts' - did you perhaps mean to key 'old farts' (a vulgar, if graphic, expression used in the UK)?
