John – please read this. I am sorry I said that I couldn’t understand your posts. The fault is all mine. I stopped learning Science at school early on – a decision I have always regretted. Paradoxically, my favourite AR character is Dick – he knew more as a boy than I do now. And he was brave – let us not forget that. It takes something for a young lad to set up his own furnace and try to smelt gold (or copper as it turned out). And it took guts to set off on the wind-sledge to the North Pole, in the teeth of a blizzard, just because a flag was flown at B***f**t.

In fact I stopped doing Chemistry in the Fourth Form. We never called it ‘Stinks’, although that was a term used for Chemistry in some schools, and Nancy uses it to describe the assays by Dick and Timothy in ‘Picts & Martyrs’. Again, I apologise for describing you recently as ‘Stinks Nichols’ – I should have realised that the term may not have crossed the Atlantic, and that it might sound insulting over there. In fact, after thinking it through, the ‘internationalism’ of TARS may be the thing that has landed me in trouble. One must remember that a totally innocent sentence in the UK might sound offensive or condescending 20,000 miles away.

As to ‘laying off’, that is Ian’s job. And I am not ‘whingeing’, just trying to find out what divides us all. The task must continue, don’t you agree?
