The rescue of the polar bear in WH, while a fascinating piece of prose from many points of view raises, for me, the question of why Mr Dixon hadn't fenced off that ledge long ago?
'It's not the first sheep to come cragfast just there,' said Silas, 'but it's a bad spot to get them out of there without men and ropes.'
From a practical point of view it really needs the 'lifejacket' approach - if you don't have it, you'll need it but if you have it then the problem rarely if ever arises.
