Hilary, bamboo poles are not OT. They were used by the Swallows to survey SW. However, a problem arises with the diameter that you require. 10cm is quite big and arguably could be OT. Perhaps Peter, H could draft a ruling regarding the maximum permitted diameter of On Topic bamboo poles?

On second thoughts, bamboo was used as a construction material in China so you might just get away with large diameter bamboo poles. I defer to the Tarboard elders on this one.
