I hope someone versed in metallurgy or chemistry will provide an
authoritative reply. My memory of school chemistry is dim.
Would heated copper oxydise before melting? Would the oxide form
a coating protecting the metal inside? Does the crucible partially
exclude oxygen? Ask me some maths instead and I might stand a chance.

Anyway, copper smelting by techniques similar to those in Pigeon Post
is possible. In message 1332, in February this year, I described how
it was done in the British Channel 4 TV archaeology programme
"Time Team". They were excavating a site of the Beaker People in
Mallorca and, as a sideline, had a go at replicating some of their
technology. They succeeded in making a small piece of copper.
But they did use ready-made charcoal.
