In a few days comes my 71st birthday - Apr 21, 1935. And as for me keeping "us" going another decade, I just hope to keep ME going that long.

With that goal in mind, it is great to be able to slip temporarily away from this mortal coil for a time and go sailing with my dear childhood friends as they never seem to grow up, and while I am with them, I, too, remain young. The stories remain fresh, regardless of the number of times I have experienced them.

Amazing really, how well we have come to know these people. It is a rather large cast of characters for any author to tackle the character development of each, yet it is done in a manner that we have a very personal relationship with these well known friends of ours. Their responses are expected; it is their personality that would have them answer thus.

But what is even more remarkable is that they are growing, and their personalities are shifting to adapt to increasing maturity. It has already been pointed out elsewhere how John's "becoming a man" in WD continued to the more adult assignment of mapping out the Secret Water, even with the urging of Nancy to continue to play. She recognizes this shift in John, and realizes that for the most part, she will go along with it, with one final "war" as a momento to their earlier youthful moments.

It all brings us to that frequently asked question directed to the author, "Are they Real?" For an author to make them such is indeed remarkable. It also makes them precious to us all that have had the privilege of knowing them.
