I am saddened that people felt it necessary to make derogatory remarks - one person failing to see any relevance to the broads (which Ransome books have they read?! Or not read).
If I can remember, I said that I went on a holiday on the broads with my sister and some friends inspired by the books, albeit in a cruiser (we were no sailors, although we lived near Budworth Lake in Cheshire, which is a nice sailing spot. I hope we weren't Hullabaloos. I eventually owned a narrow boat for a short time, max. speed 4 mph. It was great poddling down canals, thinking what wonderful progress I was making, when little old ladies walking their dogs would overtake me.
I hope there is more interest in the Northern River Pirates - I identified particularly with the crew of the Death and Glory. (Still do).
My boat was an apprentice built converted tug, with a two cylinder Lister engine in the middle. Eventually it turned into a sieve, and I had to sell it to someone who can spend the money on it to plate it to the gunwhales (spell)
