I have been wondering whether I just haven't read the appropriate material, or if I didn't take note when I did, to answer a question I've had recently. Andy, your excellent essay -- which I greatly enjoyed reading -- reminded me of it. And I hope all the TarBoarders with more knowledge of things AR-related will forgive me if this is an obvious and well-worn point, to whit: why Kanchenjunga? Why did AR use this mountain name as the fictional Walkers' fictional name for the Old Man?

It seems as if you are hinting at something in the reference to "Kanchenjunga upon Matterhorn, Matterhorn upon then Old Man." What is it that I don't know?
