There were two high profile, but unsuccessful german expeditions in 1929 and 1931, I suspect AR used the name because it was a high mountain and "in the news". The sort of thing that the Walkers would have picked up on. Similarly, the Matterhorn was an iconic mountain for the late Victorians like Master Blackett and the Turners.
