I recently found a collection of newspaper columns, written for agricultural weeklies in the 1920's, by Laura Ingalls Wilder. One column discusses how they built up a spring above the house with concrete sides, and had a ram in order to provide running water for the farm.

On a more literary side, these columns seem to knock the 'Laura couldn't write well, so Rose rewrote the books' theory on the head.
