Actually I do think that the carriage and horses were hired. It was not uncommon for stables to hire out carriages or traps for those that wanted them.

Keeping a carriage and horses with the associated costs and labour would be a very expensive proposition even back then.

By 1929/30 cars were not so uncommon amongst middle class families, especially in the country. Ransome owned one at Low Ludderburn and he was hardly a millionaire before he wrote S&A. Rattletrap is described as old, which in those days of unreliable vehicles may have been four or five years, so I think that the Blacketts already owned Rattletrap, but perhaps the GA didn't trust Molly Blackett's driving skills (neither would I) or else she preferred the gentler pace of bygone days for an afternoon jaunt.

I also think that if the Blacketts owned horses we would have seen some sign of them in other places, such as the stable yard....
