This photograph in the weeks archives, does it not show the Island in the location of Wildcat?

The photo shows a promontory, in the same position as ‘Darien’ on AR's lake, and an island in roughly in the right place for Wild Cat Island in relation to this promontory. The island is called Ramp Holme. If you actually stand on the promontory, and look South down the lake, you can see Ramp Holme standing out distinctly from the rest of the lake scenery. Now imagine a very young AR, unhappy at boarding school, trailing behind his classmates on a long walk along the Windermere shore. He looks down the lake from this very promontory, with his creative imagination working overtime, and sees this island.

Wild Cat is generally considered to be an amalgam of Blake Holme on Windermere and the rocky ‘Secret Harbour’ from Peel Island on Coniston. But I believe there is a third strand in the rope, and that when AR describes the Swallows looking down his Lake and seeing the island (not yet named ‘Wild Cat’) from ‘Darien’, he is describing the view of Ramp Holme that he saw as a schoolboy.

Temporary link to the photo. Ramp Holme is 20% right and 60% up measuring from the bottom left. The big island is Belle Isle or 'Long Island' in the books.

This week's Lakeland Cam is a feast for AR fans: Watershead and the rooftops of Pull Wood House, and a photo of an Amazon look-alike balanced-lug dinghy, sailing on Coniston, complete with a red-capped skipper.
