Was Beckfoot a cold place in which to live?

The main aspect of Beckfoot, bordering the lawn sloping down to the river, faced North. This aspect included CF study, the A’s bedroom and presumably the dining or lounge area.
According to the maps, particularly in PM, Kanchenjunga and other hills lay to the west and the former stable block/pigeon loft masked the sun to the south. Also the house was surrounded by trees except to the East.
This means that except in the height of summer, the house at Beckfoot received little direct sunlight. AR’s pictures always show Beckfoot with at least one plume of smoke from the chimneys. Obviously the kitchen range would be lit all day but this would seem to indicate that Beckfoot was cold.
