For those who are interested in Steam Engines AND mining, the Coal Mine Museum in Madrid, New Mexico (about thirty miles South of Santa Fe on the back road - Always Travel the Back Roads - ) should still be in operation. It contains two old Steam Engines and a demonstration mine shaft made for tourists which goes in a couple hundred feet so you can safely experience a "real" mineshaft. We lived there for a year and three months in '65-6. I think it is still in operation. It was the only place west of the Mississippi that had both Bituminous and Anthricite coal in the same location. No lakes, but great places for kids to explore!
