I would argue the SD is the book where Susan shows at her finest. After all, Captain Flint said 'There was never an expedition with a better mate.' Hmmm- a possible Mixed Moss article on which book stars which child......

I've always enjoyed how, after the shipwreck, she is tidying up the camp and sends everyone off- most to get milk, and Captain Nancy off to be the lookout, it being so hard to tidy people. I also liked the 'thin triangles of buttered sandwiches' that she produced to reassure Mrs. Walker.

Personally, I've always felt myself to be a Peggy.
