There was supposed to have been a bridge/viaduct to carry the mainline across to Dartmouth and beyond. Theories on why the project was dumped vary. The local objection was one reason, the bridge/viaduct would be a hazard to Shipping (remember Dartmouth Naval College is up stream of here) and the other was that the project became either too expensive or the reason for continuation of the line became obsolete. Take your pick. Either way no railway was ever built.
