I always had Tom down as a grammar-school boy, although I didn't know which actual school he might have attended. I also thought the Death & Glories were probably about to sit their eleven-plus, if they passed they would have joined Tom, if they failed they would have remained at their village school for another couple of years until they could start as apprentice boatbuilders.
