When I first started to name the streets in Maryland, Council wrote to me and said I had to use the names of the White Anglo settlers in the area. I wrote back and said sorry, your guy had already approved a list of 50 Koori names and we used those. I let the person who designed the road pick the name and often they used Koori words with meanings associated with family members, ie Bimbadeen means Cricket and the girl's boyfriend's nickname was Cricket.
Only one sly person snuck a real name through the system, actually he was a Canadian and put his wife's Greek name into the plan. He told me that years later.
